Making Nonprofit Advocacy Actionable: Training, Tools, and FAQs
Advocacy for nonprofits can feel much more complicated that it needs to be! When done correctly, nonprofit advocacy is fully permissible under 501(c)(3) requirements and can provide a vital complement to nonprofit mission of every type, from human services to the arts and environmental causes.
As an advocacy and public policy expert, I hear a lot of questions about what nonprofit advocacy is, what advocacy training entails, what advocacy methods and strategies work best, and more. So, let’s break down the barriers to nonprofit advocacy and see how it really works!
What is included in advocacy training for nonprofits?
I take a participatory approach to advocacy training that makes each session engaging and even fun! My sessions are customized to address diverse audiences, from novices to more experienced advocates. Individual sessions typically range from one to two hours and can be conducted in person or online. Multiple sessions can be arranged to address a variety of topics.
How do you coach nonprofit directors?
Many nonprofit directors and C-suite professionals are excellent organizational leaders but do not have experience engaging with government. I support and guide leaders one-on-one so that they are confident in building strategic relationships, staying vigilant about policy issues that impact their organizations, and advocating effectively when needed.
Can you help us build an advocacy strategy?
Absolutely! The most effective advocacy is proactive. I can facilitate your staff and board members in identifying your policy priorities and developing a strategy and plan to achieving your goals.
Can you help us build relationships with legislators?
The foundation of any advocacy strategy is building relationships with legislators who can influence your policy priorities. I can help you identify who these legislators are, make introductions, and help you build a plan to maintain these relationships for the future.
What types of nonprofits should be engaged in policy change?
Every nonprofit – no matter the size or mission – can benefit from advocacy. Whether you are advocating for operational funding, supportive services for your clients, or changes in law or regulation, advocacy can amplify your mission beyond the services you provide.
